Professor of Surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm

Lars Lundell graduated from medical school at the University of Lund, Sweden in 1976. Before he received his M.D. he had started his research career at the Institute of Physiology at the same University, and defended his Ph.D. thesis in March 1975.

Lars Lundell has maintained his clinical research interest in acid related disorders such as peptic ulcer disease and its complications and above all GERD. Within the field of GERD, his research has followed two main pathways. One relates to pathogenetic mechanisms either confined to the motor function of the gastroesophageal junction or epithelial defense mechanisms. The other focuses on the efficacy of and mechanisms behind different long-term therapeutic concepts such as PPI therapy and antireflux surgery.

Other important and successful research areas for Lars Lundell have been various aspects on the surgical treatment of cancer in the upper GI tract with particular focus on cancer of the stomach and esophagus.
