Professor and Chairman, Department of Medicine, University of Greifswald

Prof. Lerch was educated in the Rhineland. He majored in Philosophy and Art History at the University of Freiburg and then attended Medical School in Freiburg, Glasgow, Toronto and at the University of Massachusetts. He received his MD (magna cum laude) from Freiburg in 1983. After a Pathology Internship in Freiburg he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Technical University of Aachen. On a DFG research scholarship he spend three years at Harvard and the University of Milano, Italy, where he was trained in pathophysiology and cell biology.

After completing a GI fellowship in Ulm and his board certification in Gastroenterology (1993) he accepted an appointment as staff scientist at the Max-Planck-Institut for Biochemistry in Munich, where he joined the Molecular Biology Department of Axel Ullrich and was board certified in Biochemistry.

Prof. Lerch is a member or fellow of several learned societies including AGA, APA and ACG, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, Scotland. He has served as President of the International Association of Pancreatology, Secretary of the European Pancreatic Club and Associate Editor for GUT and Pancreatology. Since 2010 he serves as UEGF Independent Councillor and Secretary of the German Gastroenterological Association (DGVS).

His research focus and scientific expertise include gastrointestinal inflammation and pancreatic disorders and his technical expertise is in interventional ERCP.
